Support Services for Students

In your time as a student representative, you will be the first point of contact for your class or department when it comes to finding solutions. It is therefore important for you to understand that as part of your role, you can signpost your classmate or friend to a service within the university or to a piece of information that will support them. Remember, it is not your responsibility to solve their problem, so its important to keep healthy boundaries, as identified in the previous section.

The key support services in the university that you will need to be aware of are

The chaplains provide a listening service, offer a welcoming space and supportive presence to students and staff. They promote an open and caring environment where diversity is respected.  The key activities of the UL Chaplaincy team fall into 3 categories:

• Support
• Worship/Spirituality
• Outreach / Volunteering

Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service provides support during normal working hours (9am-5pm) throughout the semester.

This is a free and confidential service. We are a first point of contact for mental health needs.

Student Affairs Division
UL’s Student Affairs Division provides a wide range of supports and services to our students. We recognise that the classroom is not your sole province of learning, and we support you to participate, engage, develop and be successful during your time in UL. Amongst the range of services we offer are:

• Financial supports and advice
• Student health services
• Counselling and wellbeing services
• First point of contact support – for new students within your own faculty (see also below)
• First Year Support Coordinator – to guide you on more challenging issues that may arise for you during your first year in UL
• Volunteering opportunities

If you are a HEAR, DARE, Mature or QQI student, our dedicated access and widening participation offices will also advise you on specific supports that may be available to you.

All our services are fully operational on campus for the 2023-24 academic year, and we very much look forward to meeting you in person. We also offer online and phone enquiries and appointments for anyone who prefers to contact us that way. Details of how to contact our different services can be seen on the Student Affairs Website.

Student Engagement and Support Officers
We understand that many students may need some guidance and general advice during their transition into university and especially if you have started a little later on your course than your peers. You are welcome and encouraged to contact your Student Engagement and Support Officer (SESO) for your faculty, if this is the case. Your SESO can chat to you in person or online and can offer information and advice on all aspects of college life. Let us work together to get you started on your journey here at the University of Limerick.
